NEWS and SHOOT RESULTS

The impending solar eclipse didn’t seem to adversely impact scores any, but it sure did reduce the number of shooters. Everyone must have been traveling to South Carolina. As a result everyone that showed up went home with a boat load of grocery prizes.

First, the Pistol Match. There were three shooters and the early results looked like there was going to be a total run away. At 25 yards Max Kingsley turned in an impressive 47X while JP Sherkus turned in a 44X and Mike Rybak posted a 40. At 50 yards JP Sherkus showed his consistency with a 43 and a total of 87X for First Place. Mike Rybak brought a 44 for a score of 84 and Second Place. Max Kingsley shot a 33 for a total of 80X and Third Place.

Some rifle shooters STOCK PILED targets which delayed scoring and final results, but we finally got it all worked out and properly recorded.
The Schutzenmeister was having a happy and cheerful day so, with the exception of the 25 yard targets we had a pretty easy day.

First, at 25 yards, was 3 Critters. JP Sherkus managed a 20 with Jim Ellis right behind at 18. Then Casey Rybak also had an 18 that wasn’t quite as good as Jim’s and Tony Sucher followed with a 17.

Then there was the Black Square with the White Wedge (or whatever it is). Tony Sucher scored a 26X to edge out JP Sherkus at 25. Frank Niccoli came in with a 22. Then scores fell off with Dwight Hlustick scoring an 18.
The last 25 yard target was the Standing Groundhog. Last month Carter Murray must have given his Great Uncle shooting lessons because JP Sherkus scored an excellent 45 with Jim Ellis close behind with a 44. Tony Sucher with a 42X just edged out Frank Niccoli at 42.

At 50 yards the Groundhog Head stood tall and, with the magical help of the pending eclipse, JP Sherkus scored a 30X. The next highest score was 19 by Tony Sucher. Then Frank Niccoli had 18 and Dwight Hlustick had 10.

The final target was the EGG!!. Again with the fine tutoring of Carter and some eclipse magic JP Sherkus scored a 47. Jim Ellis scored a very respectable 44. Tony Sucher had a 43 and Dwight Hlustick had a 42.

…..those 50 yard targets weren’t so easy after all.

The TOP SHOOTER for August, taking First Place in 4 of the 5 targets, with an Aggregate score of 167 was JP Sherkus!!  HooRah!! JP !! Second Place with 147XX was Tony Sucher. A 135XX earned Third Place for Frank Niccoli. The Fourth Place slot belonged to Jim Ellis with 128. In order of score the other shooters were Dwight Hlustick, Art Twichell, Max Kingsley, Mike Rybak and Casey Rybak.

The next match will be September 17th. It will be an Individual Target Competition. Entry fee is $20. You get 3 of each rifle target and, if competing, 3 of each pistol target. Score your own, hand in your best.

Please, do not stock pile or delay handing in your targets. You have 3 of each. After you shoot your best score of the thee and score your own, turn it in so we can keep the score sheet current. All shots are from the free-standing, off-hand position. Shooting begins at 8 AM and ends at 12 PM.

Relays are approximately 20 minutes each. Any safe muzzle loader (flint, cap, firelock, side slapper, under hammer, inline) may be used. Iron sights (open, peep, aperture) only, no scopes or optics permitted. Spotting scopes may be used.

Subject to change without notice—generally there are 5 targets, some requiring 5 shots, some only 3. Expect the unexpected and have a bundle of fun. Usually distances are 25 and 50 yards.

News and Shoot Results

July brought 10 shooters out for the match. Two were special: JP brought along his grandnephew Carter Murray visiting from California. Albert Short came out to join us also. Albert was a BRML member some years ago and has rejoined us.

In addition we had guests!! Mike Snyder invited friends Rebecca Massello and Melanie Seader to come try muzzle loaders. There was a lot of BRIGHTNESS emitting from the right side of the range from all the smiles. Also visiting was Jeff Stewart. Jeff saw our web site, contacted me and came out to see what’s going on. He also brought his daughter, Fiona. Hope you had as much fun as we did having you come out.

 

Hey, Schutzenmeister!! Maybe we can get a Ladies Division going!!

This time the Schutzenmeister pulled out all the stops. She reached into her possibles bag and found the (nearly) impossible.

At 25 yards there was the Rubics Cube for 3 shots. Everyone forgot about the lead attracting negative scores on the target. Mike Rodzianko managed to avoid the traps and scored 27 for First Place. Liam Connor was close behind with 22 for Second Place. Then JP Sherkus took Third with 19 and Albert Short took Fourth with 19. The Prize Fetcher set things up this time for SIX PLACES!! Fifth Place was Mike Kingsley with 17 and Sixth was Frank Niccoli with 17.

The long lost Axe Blade and Candles was next. There were so many 8’s scored I had to use the overlay and a micrometer to break the ties. Only 0.006 inch separated fourth, fifth and sixth place. First Place belonged to Liam Connor with 18. Second Place was Albert Short with 16. Art Twichell won Third Place with 10X. THEN at 8 was Casey Rybak, Fourth; JP Sherkus, Fifth; Mike Kingsley, Sixth. (Be thee GONE, Axe & Candles!!)

 

The last 25 yard target was the Pyramid with the lead attracting negative scores on the edges. This one required 5 shots. Mike Kingsley managed a 38 for First Place. Then we dropped down to 31 for Second Place by Art Twichell. THIRD PLACE BELONGED SOLELY TO CARTER MURRAY WITH 28!! Hurrah Carter!! Mike Rodzianko scored 26 for Fourth and Albert Short took Fifth with 24. JP Sherkus also scored 24 but was Sixth.

50 yards was started off with the X that had 0’s that attracted lead. The top scorers were tightly packed together. With 3 shots Art Twichell managed to score 29 for First Place. Second Place was a close behind 28 by Liam Connor. A 25X brought Alber Short into Third Place and Mike Kingsley did 24 for Fourth Place. JP Sherkus was Fifth with 23 and Mike Rodzianko was Sixth with 20.

The last rifle target was the Soccer Ball for 5 shots. Both JP Sherkus and Mike Kingsley scored 42, but JP scored it the hard way and took First Place so Mike took Second. Third Place was CARTER MURRAY. YAHOO CARTER !! (I think the kid’s a ringer). Mike Rodzianko took Fourth with 30 while Frank Niccoli was Fifth with 27. Albert Short took Sixth with 20.

Four people participated in the pistol competition. At 25 yards it was a tight match with JP Sherkus scoring 47X and was the early favorite with Mike Kingsley scoring 45X, Mike Rybak scored 41 and Mike Rodzianko scored 39. At 50 yards Mike Rybak turned in another 41 with an X . Mike Rodzianko scored 33. Then JP Sherkus turned in a 37. When Mike Kingsley turned in a 40 there was a scramble to the scoring table. First Place = 85X Mike Kingsley. Second Place = 84X JP Sherkus. Third Place = 82X Mike Rybak. Fourth Place = 73 Mike Rodzianko.

The TOP SHOT for the match with a 129 total score was Mike Kingsley. Second was JP Sherkus with 116. Third was Mike Rodzianko with 111 and Albert Short at 103X and Fourth. Art Twichell took Fifth with 98XX and Liam Connor was Sixth with 93. They were followed by Frank Niccoli (91), Carter Murray (79), Mike Rybak (43), Casey Rybak (27).

The Prize Fetcher did something a little different this time. Pretty nice prizes were purchased for each target. Then, in order of score, the top six shooters selected one of the prizes. Of course the can of beans was left until last, so guess who got that. What did you think of that?

Possible Match Format Ideas

A couple of ideas for competition have been suggested. First, a timed match. Load and fire as fast as you can. No prepared charges. Loading blocks are permitted. Top score wins. Of course, the faster you shoot, the more hits you get, the higher your score ………… maybe.

“Shooting from the bag” is a lost art that you don’t usually see unless you attend a primitive match.

Safety rules for these two types of match are a little different. And some accommodation would have to be made for flintlocks.

NEWS and SHOOT RESULTS

A whole passel of people came out for the Father’s Day shoot. But only one Father/Son team. A total of 14 shooters and at least 5 visitors braved the heat and humidity. The temperature officially only got to 90°F but the range thermometer was reading 99°F. Humidity was a whopping 89%. That made the discomfort index 103.

The Schutzenmeister was walking around telling everyone there were easy targets this time around.

That brought smiles to many faces. If only they knew…..

Targets and Scores

At 25 yards the first target was Odds & Ends for 3 shots. Easy?? Mike Rodzianko hit the high score on the Soccer ball portion (and not much else) for First Place at 60. Trevor Evans was Second with 44 and Jim Ellis scored 42 for Third. Mike and Casey Rybak shared honors at Fourth with 35’s. But the prize was Casey’s.

Next was the Critters for 3 shots. Easy???? First Place went to Casey Rybak with 29 and a really nice target. (I’m seeing a pattern here—she out shot Mike) Second Place went to JP Sherkus with 27. Trevor Evans was right in there with 24 and Third. Jim Ellis was Fourth with 23.

Last was the Standing Buffalo for 5 shots. Tony Sucher scored 47 for First Place. Jim Ellis got Second with 46. Rob Capp was in Third with 42 and Mike Rodzianko took Fourth with 41.

At 50 yards Tony Sucher forgot to move his target frame to 50 yards which left him with only 35 minutes to shoot two targets.

The first target was the Groundhog Head for 3 shots. Tony Sucher managed to get his first three shots in good scores and won First Place with a 27. Rob Capp was only one point behind at 26 for Second place. JP Sherkus and CC Arpin tied at 20 but CC won Third place by being closest to the X and JP took Fourth.

The final target was the Egg for 5 shots. JP Sherkus scored 47X for First Place. Max Kingsley got Second place with 47 and Trevor Evans got Third with 46X. Fourth place went to John Arpin with 46. (Tony did manage a 43).

Four pistol shooters competed, but Mike Rodzianko broke a spring after just a couple of shots at 50 yards.

First Place went to JP Sherkus with 89X. Second Place was Mike Rybak with 81, Max Kingsley took Third with 44 and Mike Rodzianko took Fourth.

The TOP SHOT for the match was Trevor Evans with 168X. Next was Jim Ellis with 163. Third place was Tony Sucher with 162. Fourth was JP Sherkus with 155X. Then came Mike Rodzianko (146), Rob Capp(142), Max Kingsley (135), John Arpin (118), Frank Niccoli (115), Casey Rybak (114), Art Twichell (113), Mike Rybak (INC), Mikel Kingsley (INC), and CC Arpin (INC).
