Overview
Bull Run Muzzle Loaders holds its matches on the third Sunday of every month at the Arlington-Fairfax Chapter of the Izaak Walton League.
Anyone is welcome. Club guns and individual instruction are available. So if you got a new muzzleloader for Christmas, need to learn how to use it, need to sight it in, or just want to fire a few rounds through it, COME ON OUT. Any safe muzzleloader, but no optics/glass sights. Competitions begin at 9:00 AM after a short meeting and safety instructions.
Competitions end at 2:00 PM with prizes being awarded as soon as the Shoot Masters have tallied the scores.
Children under 16, accompanied by an adult, shoot free and participate in the prize winning.
Prizes at BRML shoots are usually groceries, and bragging rights. The competitions are unique in that everyone who enters generally manages to take something home. The entry fee is $20 for three of each target (usually 5) plus pistol targets if you want to enter that competition also.
Entry fee is $20. You get 3 of each rifle target and, if competing, 3 of each pistol target. Score your own, hand in your best.
Please, do not stock pile or delay handing in your targets. You have 3 of each. After you shoot your best score of the thee and score your own, turn it in so we can keep the score sheet current. All shots are from the free-standing, off-hand position. Shooting begins at 8 AM and ends at 12 PM.
Relays are approximately 20 minutes each. Any safe muzzle loader (flint, cap, firelock, side slapper, under hammer, inline) may be used. Iron sights (open, peep, aperture) only, no scopes or optics permitted. Spotting scopes may be used.
Subject to change without notice—generally there are 5 targets, some requiring 5 shots, some only 3. Expect the unexpected and have a bundle of fun. Usually distances are 25 and 50 yards.
Usually does not mean always, and our Schutzenmeister always promises something “interesting”.
Shooters who are not Izaak Walton League Arlington-Fairfax Chapter members must sign a liability release form (“the blue form”) to participate. All shooters should sign into the range log book when entering the range and should sign out when leaving.
Safety Information:
- ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. This is the primary rule of gun safety.
- ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
- ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
- Prime: cap or powder in the pan at the line, not at the bench
- Follow directions from the range safety officers.
- Be sure to use the correct powder in your muzzle loader: do not use smokeless powder in a gun designed only for black powder.
- Be sure your projectile is seated firmly on the powder.
- Always use a proper powder measure. DO NOT load directly from a bulk powder container such as a bottle or horn.
- If you are unsure about something, ASK a range safety officer for help.

From the North (i.e. the intersection of Rte. 29 and Rte. 28, or I 66 and Rte. 28, or Leesburg, etc.)
SOUTH on Rte. 28 to New Braddock Road, turn RIGHT at light.
Take FIRST LEFT turn, at light onto Old Centreville Road.
Turn RIGHT onto Old Mill Road.
Take FIRST LEFT turn onto Mt. Olive Road.
IWL gate will be on your RIGHT.
Rifle Range is on the RIGHT, just past the main Club House (on left)
If you miss New Braddock Road, keep going to next RIGHT, at light.
That’s Old Mill Road.
Follow the rest of the directions above.
If you miss Old Mill Road, keep going to next RIGHT, at light.
That’s Compton Road.
Bear right on Compton Road at Y
Turn RIGHT onto Mt. Olive Road.
IWL gate will be on your LEFT.
If you miss Compton Road, you’re headed for cow country.
From the South (i.e. Manassas)
NORTH on Rte. 28 to Compton Road, turn LEFT at light.
Bear to the RIGHT at the Y
Turn RIGHT onto Mt. Olive Road
IWL gate will be on your LEFT
If you miss Compton Road, keep going to next LEFT, at light.
That’s Old Mill Road
Take FIRST LEFT turn onto Mt. Olive Road.
IWL gate will be on your RIGHT.
Rifle Range is on the RIGHT, just past the main Club House (on left)
If you miss Old Mill Road, keep going to the next LEFT, at light.
That’s New Braddock Road
Take FIRST LEFT turn, at light onto Old Centreville Road.
